The online version of the Chemical Abstracts index.

Basic Research Pathways

If you want to…

Then do this in SciFinder Web

Find literature references by keywords References > enter keywords without using AND or OR, but breaking up your topic with prepositions (of, for, with, etc.)   Use parentheses to indicate synonyms, e.g. "contrast agents (contrast media)".

Find a substance by name

Substances > Substance Identifier

Find a substance by structure

Substances > Chemical Structure

Find Property Data (either calculated from the structure or experimentally determined)

Find a substance above, then click on the Registry Number or Structure, scroll down for properties.  For more details, click on the reference as noted in the right-hand column and the ‘paper’ icon to look for full text.

Find Preparations

Find a substance above, then click on # of References and choose References Associated with…Preparation.

Find reactions to make a certain substance

Find a substance above, then click on Reactions and choose Product

Find reactions by chemical type

Reactions > Reaction Structure > icon for ‘alchol/ketone/aldeh’ to choose general compound type.  Choose for reactant & product, then connect the two with arrow. Click OK, then Search.

Start a structure search based on an existing structure

Find a structure above, then click on the Registry Number or Structure, and click on structure diagram.  Choose Explore by Chemical Structure.
