The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950. Its mission is to promote the progress of science, to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare, and to secure the national defense. The NSF initiates, supports, and strengthens scientific and engineering research and education through various initiatives, grants, awards, graduate and postgraduate fellowships to educational institutions in the United States.
