Quick Reference: Exporting From Electronic Resources and Importing Into EndNote

How an export file depends upon the operating system and browser options. You will need to verify how your computer set-up handles downloaded files: where they are saved and how to access them.

University Libraries
Catalog / OhioLINK Catalog

First, make sure  to use View in classic catalog. Mark records in University Libraries Catalog or OhioLINK from the list of titles, click in the boxes to the left of the titles, then click on the button Save Marked Records at the top or bottom of the page. When looking at an individual record, click on the Save Records icon at the top or bottom of the page.

• Click on the View Saved icon at the top or bottom of the screen.

• For Format of List, select End-Note/Refworks.

• For the Send List to option, select Local Disk.

• Click on the Submit button.

• If an Unknown File Type box pops up, click on the Save file button.

• Save it as a text file – give it a new name with a .txt extension, such as filename.txt

In EndNote, select Import under File (or use Import icon in Toolbar) and choose the file to import

• For Import Data File, select the file in which the citations were saved.

• For the Import Option, select ReferBibIX

• For the Duplicates Option, select the desired option.

• For Text Translation, leave the default option (No translation).

• Click on Import.

NOTE: Imports from catalogs such as the University Libraries Catalog and the OhioLINK Catalog often contain added information and punctuation that needs to be removed. Open the imported references and edit as needed.

OhioLINK Databases:

Electronic Book Center, Electronic Journal Center

Search for and export records from the UToledo or OhioLINK catalogs. See instructions above for University Libraries Catalog / OhioLINK Catalog.

From the OhioLINK catalog:

• Click on the item title to open the item record

• Click the Save for Export button

• When ready, click View Saved Records

  For Format of List, select End-Note/Refworks.

• For the Send List to option, select Local Disk

• Select the records to export and click on the Submit button.

In EndNote, select Import under File (or use Import icon in Toolbar) and choose the file to import

• Click on Import.

PubMed

•  Select desired citation(s) (check box to the left of citations)

•  From the Send To menu, choose Citation manager.

• Click Create File

•  Select Open with and choose the EndNote helper application from the browse list

• Click OK. This action should open EndNote.

Direct Import:

•  If necessary, select the library into which the references are to be imported. Import is automatic.

EBSCOhost Databases

CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, Health Source, AltHealth-Watch, APA Psycinfo, Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection, etc.

To export a single record:

•  Click on the record title

•  In the right side Tools menu, select Export

•  File format defaults to RIS -- just click Save to export

•  When prompted to Open with, click OK.

 

•  To save multiple items in an EBSCOhost database for export, click on the blue folder icon to the right of each record.

•  When ready to export, click on the Folder icon at the top of the page.

•  Select the desired records to export or select All
 
•  Click on Export

•  Choose Direct Export to EndNote, ProCite, or  Reference Manager.

•  Click on Save.

Direct Import:

•  (If necessary) select the library into which the references are to be imported. Import is automatic.

Web of Science Citation Indexes:

Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, Arts & Humanities Citation Index

• Select the records to be exported

• Select Save to EndNote Desktop

• Select contents to be exported and click Send

To export records saved to the Marked List:

•   To save: Click in the boxes to the left of the titles and  click on Marked List at the top of the page.

•  When ready, click on View Marked Records

•  Select the records and content to be exported.

•  Select and click on Save to EndNote Desktop.

•  When prompted to Open with, click the OK button.

Direct Import:

•  (If necessary) select the library into which the references are to be imported. Import is automatic.

ProQuest
Nursing & Allied Health Source

•  To mark records in a ProQuest database, click in the box to the left of the reference.

•  At the top of the results list, click on the Export/Save icon, then select EndNote, Citavi, or Reference Manager

•  Click Continue.

•  When the pop-up window appears, Open with Endnote, click on Save.

Direct Import:

• (If necessary) select the library into which the references are to be imported. Import is automatic.

National Library of Medicine Gateway

Text files downloaded from the NLM Gateway are not formatted for export to EndNote.

Text files downloaded from the NLM Gateway are not formatted for import to EndNote.

Google Scholar

Configure Google Scholar to send references to EndNote:

• Go to the Google Scholar home page at http://scholar.google.com

•  Click on the Settings link

• Under Bibliography Manager select the option Show links to import citations into and choose EndNote in the drop down box

• Click on the Save Preferences button

Follow these steps to import search results into EndNote:

• After performing a search on Google Scholar click on the Import into EndNote link for the reference you want to import

• If you are presented with a window asking if you want to Open or Save the file, choose to open the file

• If you have more than one library, a Select a Reference Library window will appear. Use this window to select the EndNote library you want the reference imported into.
