The University Libraries own or has access to many of the journals indexed by databases such as MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Science Citation Index, and Biological Abstracts. To find out if the Library owns or has access to the needed journals, check the University of Toledo online catalog:
In the catalog (or use the Books & More tab in the tabbed box on the home page), do a title search for the exact, full title of the journal (not the title of the article). Note: Using the abbreviation will work if it is the official title, e.g. JAMA.
To see only what is available at the Mulford Library, after completing your search, change the View the Entire Collection drop-down menu or Location to Health Science Library.
If you are not sure exactly what the title of the journal is, contact Mulford Reference Assistance (419-383-4218) or check the National Library of Medicine's List of Serials Indexed for Online Users.
If the catalog presents a list of titles from which to choose, the journal will be the title that is followed by this icon:
If there is a title that does not have a format designation (PERIODICAL/ SERIAL, BOOK, etc.), usually that indicates that there are a number of records with this title. Click on the title to see if the journal can be found within that sublist of titles.
Choose the online link to go directly to the electronic version of the journal, or choose the the undesignated title to view the journal record. The record will provide information about the availability of the journal and print copy holdings as well as print or electronic availability.
For more information about online journals, see "Using the University Libraries Catalog and OhioLINK Catalog" help sheet.
If you are viewing the catalog with the Encore Discovery tool, you may see a screen that looks like this:
Only the most recent five years of journals are stored here in the Library.
Generally, journals published more than five years ago are stored off-site. Articles from these older journals can be ordered through ILLiad, the interlibrary loan system used at UT.
To access the University of Toledo Library Catalog:
Access to the Online Catalog Search is available free to anyone on the Internet. Access to full-text resources through the catalog, however, is restricted to those who are on campus or who are registered with the University Libraries. Access to some resources is limited to people who are affiliated with programs on the Health Science Campus or the Medical Center.
Other Methods to Determine Journal Holdings:
To find a list of online journals the UT Libraries subscribes to, see "Online Journals List" in the Quick Links menu of the UT Libraries' web pages, or the "Journals" tab in the tabbed box on the library home pages.
Search by journal title, browse alphabetically, or browse by subject. Click on a specific title in the search results to access the journal contents:
In many of the UT Libraries' databases, there will be links to determine if the article is available online. Look for links that read "Find It!" or "Find a Copy". For more information visit http://www.utoledo.edu/library/mulford/findarti.html
