The annual Health Science Campus Artist Showcase opens February 19th at the Mulford
Library. This year’s show features 24 artists and over 50 works ranging from photography
to painting to papercraft.
The HSC Artist Showcase is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students involved
in the health sciences at the University of Toledo to exhibit their talents outside
of their academic pursuits.
“For nearly 20 years, the Mulford Library has displayed works of art from students
and employees in all areas of the health sciences. We are honored to provide a welcoming
space for our campus community to share their creative side and celebrate the link
between art, science, and medicine,” Jodi Jameson, chair of the artist showcase, said.
The HSC Artist Showcase will run from February 19 - April 1, 2024, and is located on the 4th floor of the Mulford Health Science Library.
There will be an Artist Reception on Friday, Feb. 23 from 5 – 7 p.m. featuring a lecture by Rafael Garcia-Mata, PhD, Professor, Dept. of Biological Sciences,
and organizer of Toledo CellulART titled “Toledo CellulART: Bridging Art and Science.”
Rafael Garcia-Mata is currently a Professor at the University of Toledo in the Department
of Biological sciences. Originally from Argentina, where he obtained a B.S. in Biology,
he then moved to the United States to pursue a PhD in cell biology at the University
of Alabama at Birmingham under the supervision of Dr. Elizabeth Sztul. Following his
PhD, he continued his training as a postdoctoral fellow at UNC Chapel Hill in the
lab of Dr. Keith Burridge, one of the pioneers in the study of cell adhesion and migration.
Dr. Garcia-Mata has published more than 50 publications in high impact journals, Including Nature Cell Biology and Journal of Cell Biology among others. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms that
control cell adhesion, migration, and invasion in both normal and cancer cells.
Toledo CellulART is a meeting that brings together the art and scientific communities
of Northwestern Ohio, Southern Michigan, and Northeastern Indiana to appreciate the
link between art and science while also promoting collaboration, interaction, and
discussion between researchers working with the cytoskeleton.
