"The memory of reading this book soon after defecting from my native country, Hungary, in 1983 is still with me 40 years later. It seems like the progress made in those post-Soviet societies in the 1990s has largely dissipated to make room for populist, corrupt, and anti-democratic rulers like Putin, Orbán, and those who consort with them...some in the more democratic Western countries. The book has left a lasting impression in me that loyalty and service (of someone like Solzhenitsyn who is the author going through his ordeals) is often left ignored, appreciated, and - in his case - silenced. The threat of similar effects on democracy in democratic countries is escalating, only to attract radicals who may feel rewarded for their actions. Among many things, what this book communicates is the questionable value of unconditional loyalty in the face of sacrifice and retribution in any political system around the world (while it exists). This is not a happy reading but is certainly unforgettable and very timely many decades later. Even so, I have remained extremely proud of my Hungarian heritage and mother language, of Budapest as my place of birth, and - if you haven't noticed - my Indian name, which is a separate story in itself :-)."

My grandmother’s experience showed me that there were no limits to what a woman could accomplish."
