Research Exploration Part 2: Submission to Publication

Peer Review in a Nutshell

Desk Reject - The Editorial reviews a submission and decides it is not a good fit for the journal. The manuscript is "rejected" before going out for review.

Single Blind (Anonymized): The editorial team sends it out for a single review plus review by the editors.

Double Blind (Anonymized): Two reviewers are assigned - they review the abstract and decided if they are comfortable performing the review. Then the editor reviews the comments - if the reviewer comments agree, then the editor will likely go along with the decision. If they do not agree, the Editor will assign another reviewer or perform a review before sending the manuscript back to the author(s).

Variations:

Anonymous to Author, Disclosed to Reviewers: This process could make it easier for the Editor to assign the reviewers but it could lead to bias and conflicts, if the reviewers do not disclose any prior knowledge or familiarity with the author(s).

Homework: Review and provide feedback on 2 abstracts. As you provide feedback, be thoughtful and constructive in your comments. Reviews are due to Margaret.hoogland@utoledo.edu next week.
