The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950. Its mission is “to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and to secure the national defense. The NSF initiates, supports, and strengthens scientific and engineering research and education through various initiatives, grants, awards, and graduate and postgraduate fellowships to educational institutions in the United States.
