Getting Started

Before using SciFinder Scholar on the Web, you must first register for an account.

Tips for creating an account:

  • Use your UTAD username to make it easy to remember
  • You must use a utoledo.edu e-mail account
  • Passwords must contain 2 of the following:
  1. Upper & Lower Case
  2. Numbers
  3. Non-alphanumeric characters

Once you have entered your information, you will be e-mailed a confirmation which you must respond to within 48 hours to complete your registration.

*If prompted, the connection is secure... you can safely add an exception and connect to the site.

License Agreement

In order to use SciFinder Scholar, you must agree to the following License Agreement Terms (summarized):

1)  You are a current faculty, staff member, or registered student of the University.

2)  You will use SciFinder only for University-related or publicly funded research intended for publication, NOT commercial or contract research.

3)  I will not store more than 5,000 records, and won't distrubute records to others.

Log on to SciFinder Scholar on the Web

Click on the logo below to access SciFinder on the Web from on campus using your personal registration.  Access is restricted to University of Toledo faculty, staff, and students conducting University-related research.

If you are warned by your web browser that this may be a security violation, it is not... please add an exception and proceed to connect to the website.

To access the Mobile version (with limited, but still powerful functionality), use your mobile browser to go to: http://scifinder.cas.org/mobile/

Trouble Logging In?

The most common problems logging in to SciFinder Scholar on the Web are because:

You are not using the off-campus proxy.  If you get a message that you are "Not authorized from this IP address", you need to use the link: http://0-scifinder.cas.org.carlson.utoledo.edu/

Wrong Username or Password.  If you cannot remember your username or password, you can retrieve it using your e-mail address and the answer to your security question at the 'Forgot Username or Password?' link on the Login screen.

SciFinder Web System Requirements

Recommended web browsers and operating systems:

  • Windows XP Professional, Vista: Firefox 10 (ESR) and above; Internet Explorer 7 and 8; Internet Explorer v9.0 (Vista)
  • Windows 7: Firefox 10 (ESR) and above; Internet Explorer v8 and above
  • Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6*: Firefox 10 (ESR) and above; Safari 5.0 and 5.1
  • Mac OS 10.7*: Firefox 10 (ESR) and above; Safari 5.1 and  Safari 6
  • Mac OS 10.8*: Safari 6: Firefox 10 (ESR) and above

Java (JRE) Plug-In Requirements

Structure drawing requires a Java plug-in. A 64-bit version of Java is required for 64-bit browsers. For all supported operating systems and browsers use Java version 1.6.0_32 or later. Visit the Java test page to see if Java is working on your computer.

*Special Notes for customers using SciFinder with Mac OS X:

  • Re-enabling Structure Drawing after Apple Java Update 2012-006 1.0 (10/12) - This is primarily for users of Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.8. An October 2012 Apple update removed Java from those systems. If you installed that update or have a Mac manufactured after October 2012 please refer to this document.
  •  Installing Java and Enabling Java Applets in Mac OS X (8/12) - This document is primarily for users of Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) who were affected by Apple's April 2012 update where Java applets could be disabled if the Java Web plug-in detected that applets had not been run for an extended period.
