WELCOME TO THE CANADAY CENTER
Virtually all the materials held in the Canaday Center are unique and difficult or impossible to replace. As a result, they do not circulate (i.e., they cannot be checked out to or borrowed by patrons) and are maintained in closed stacks to facilitate their security and preservation. These measures have been instituted to ensure that our collections will be available for use by future generations of researchers. To that end, we ask researchers wishing to use our collections to follow the guidelines described below. We hope that you find your time here valuable.
Guidelines and Policies for Using Our Materials
- You may access our materials by appointment only, which can be requested via phone, email, or through our webform.
- All users must register using the registration form set up on the patron computer in the Reading Room. Please fill in the form as completely as possible and include current and correct contact information. Returning users must re-register every year.
- The patron computer and a document-size flatbed scanner has been provided for you to conduct supplemental, online research and do limited scanning of materials. Staff will fulfill larger photoduplication needs according to the fee schedule posted to our website.
- Laptop computers, digital cameras, and other personal devices may be used to take notes and photos of the materials.
- Cell phones should be set to vibrate or turned off. They may be used in the stair well or elevator lobby only.
- Food and drinks are NOT permitted in the Reading Room. If you have either with you, staff will be happy to store them in the refrigerator until your visit is complete.
- Handle materials with care and do not mark them.
- If you are taking notes by hand during your research, please use a pencil. We are happy to provide one for you and can sharpen it as needed.
- Although rare, a staff member may search your briefcase or backpack if there is a security concern.
- Staff will complete large photocopying and scanning requests or requests involving fragile materials. However, if the materials are in too poor a condition or there are copyright or donor restrictions, staff reserves the right to deny your request.
- It is up to the researcher to secure permission, in writing, to publish all or part of archival collections from both the Canaday Center and copyright holder(s).
- When you are completed with your research, please advise staff that the materials can be re-shelved or if you plan to return to continue your work. If you plan to continue your research, you will need to make an appointment for your next visit.
