NURS 7040: Applied Nursing Research - DNP Program: Creating an APA Bibliography with EndNote

What is EndNote?

EndNote is a bibliographic management software program. It can help you store, organize, and manage article references (and other types of information) that you find from a literature search.

As a UToledo student, you can download a copy of EndNote for your desktop or laptop for free.

To download EndNote, follow these steps:

  • Go to http://myutaccount.utoledo.edu
  • Click Login to Manage Your Services and enter your UTAD username and password
  • Under Software Downloads click Download EndNote Software
  • Save and run the appropriate EndNote20 installer for your operating system (either Mac or Windows)

Step-By-Step APA Bibliography

  • In your EndNote Library, select all of the references you wish to include in your bibliography
  • In the right side panel in EndNote, click on Summary view then choose APA 7th from the style menu
  • Under References at the top of the screen in EndNote, click on Copy Formatted References
  • Open up your Word document and go to Edit - Paste to insert the copied references into your document. Your references should now be formatted in APA 7th

A Note About Full Journal Names in APA

To make sure that full journal titles, not their abbreviations, appear in your APA references, you may need to update your Journals Terms List in EndNote before you begin your assignment.

  • In EndNote, go to Library > Open Term Lists > Journals Terms List.
  • Highlight the first journal, and press [Ctrl]+A on the keyboard to highlight all the terms
  • Next, press the Delete Term button to the right to empty the list of old terms.
  • Go to the Lists tab at the top, and click on the Import List button.
  • Browse to the Term Lists folder within the EndNote folder, and choose to open the Medical text file
