This book is the second of two volumes that aim to serve as a comprehensive guide for professionals working with neuropsychological interventions especially designed for children. This second volume complements the theoretical and practical foundations presented in the first volume by presenting applications to different clinical conditions and by exploring interfaces of neuropsychology with other areas of research and practice. Chapters in this second volume are divided into two parts. The first part presents a series of case studies, illustrating the practice and experience of neuropsychological rehabilitation and habilitation in different clinical conditions. The second part brings together chapters that discuss the interfaces of neuropsychology with different areas, which can use its knowledge and interventions (such as school neuropsychology) or which can be used as strategies within neuropsychological intervention or even compose inter and transdisciplinary partnerships in the work of promotion, stimulation, or cognitive remediation, such as the use and role of music, games and play, mindfulness, and transcranial direct current stimulation. So, chapters in this second part highlight the interfaces with other approaches, knowledges or disciplines. Originally published in Portuguese and now available in English, Neuropsychological Interventions for Children - Volumes 1 and 2 will be of interest to professionals working with neuropsychology in clinical and school contexts. It will also be useful in neuropsychology teaching contexts (specialization courses in neuropsychology and related areas) and for students and professionals in interface areas, such as Psychology, Education, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy among others. The translation of the original Portuguese version of this book into English was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.
Spoken Discourse Impairments in the Neurogenic Populations
This comprehensive volume provides balanced and easily readable chapters on contemporary topics around discourse production in patients with neurogenic disorders. Discourse broadly refers to a unit of language longer than a single sentence, typically used in a spoken or written format to express ideas, feelings, and opinions or to interact with others. As the field of research in speech-language pathology, aphasia and related neurogenic disorders, and clinical decision-making to manage neurogenic impairments is rapidly expanding, there has been an increased focus on discourse analysis and therapy to enable patients to speak well again. Speech and Interaction of Preadolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder
The book focuses on the interaction of persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD is a neurobiological developmental disorder, characterized by problems with social interaction, over-sensitivity to sensory stimuli and restricted interest (APA 2013). Problems with social interaction being a core feature of ASD, there is a scientific and a societal need for a book focusing on this topic. The book approaches the interaction of persons with ASD from a new angle. Firstly, where most studies on ASD are based on data coming from experimental settings, this book is based on naturally occurring data coming from group therapy sessions where 11-13-year-old Finnish- and French-speaking boys with ASD talk with each other and with their therapists. Secondly, the book treats a variety of themes that have so far been studied much less than, for example, the pragmatic problems of persons with ASD. These themes include the following aspects: speech prosody (characteristic features, perception of atypicality by neurotypical listeners), disfluencies of speech (comparison with neurotypical controls), comprehension problems (role of prosody, role of disfluencies, other causes), gaze behavior (eye contact avoidance strategies, using gaze as a source of feedback) as well as therapists' response strategies and teaching orientations. The book is intended for researchers working in the field of autism, professionals working with persons with ASD as well as for families of persons with ASD.
