Instruction for FYE Classes

Librarian instruction for your FYE class can be conducted by your college or department subject liaison. A full list of current liaisons are available here. All librarians offer a variety of instruction options for you to choose from.

If you are unsure of who to contact or would like a more generalized instruction session, you can also contact Jennifer Joe at jennifer.joe@utoledo.edu or her office number at 419-530-5094. As the undergraduate engagement librarian and an FYE instructor herself, she understands the needs to first-year students and will work with you to align instruction with existing coursework for seamless integration.

Most of these sources are from suggestions by Denise Bartell, Associate Vice Provost for Student Success, but this list is regularly reviewed and updated. University of Toledo Faculty Resources for Student Success
The Fundamentals of Backward Planning
A short introduction to the topic of Backwards Design written by Jay McTighe, one of the co-authors of Understanding by Design (ASCD, 2005). Other resources are also freely available on the ASCD website under Resources -> Blog.
Transparency in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
From their website, "The Transparency in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education project (TILT Higher Ed) is an award-winning national educational development and research project that helps faculty to implement a transparent teaching framework that promotes college students' success."
Research from PERTS (Project for Education Research that Scales)
From their website, "PERTS (Project for Education Research that Scales) helps educators apply evidence-based strategies in order to advance educational excellence and equity on a large scale." This link takes you to their publicly available research.
Improvement Research Carried Out Through Networked Communities: Accelerating Learning about Practices that Support More Productive Student Mindsets by Bryk, et al.
From the website: "This white paper was ... presented at a White House meeting on “Excellence in Education: The Importance of Academic Mindsets.” The meeting, held in mid-May [2013], was co-hosted by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the Department of Education and sponsored by the Raikes Foundation. The goal was to bring together a diversity of experts interested in academic mindsets. The Carnegie approach presented in the white paper was an introduction into a way to ensure the good ideas presented at the conference could achieve effectiveness with reliability at scale. With contributions from several colleagues, the paper was written by Carnegie President Anthony S. Bryk and David Yeager, an assistant professor of developmental psychology at the University of Texas at Austin and a Carnegie fellow."
