Welcome to Mulford Library and the Health Science Campus

This LibGuide is the brainchild of students in our health programs. While some of this information is presented at orientation, whose brain can take in library information in addition to all the other information we pour into your head? In this guide you will find information to help you make the most of Mulford Health Science Library and the rest of campus. It has official library information and also advice for thriving on the health science campus. If you have any suggestions for additional information to include, email us at MulfordReference@utoledo.edu.

Overview of Mulford Buildings

Mulford Library Building (MLB) - the library part of the library building is on the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors. The Library entrance is on the fourth floor. The Student Services Suite is on the first floor.

Mulford Library Annex (MLA) - when you enter the main doors of the Mulford Library Building, the Annex is to your left. It is the shorter building tucked under the Mulford Library's "legs." Your best academic support friend, the Academic Enrichment Center, is is the basement of the annex.

You can get back and forth between the main building and the annex on the first floor and the basement.

The front doors of the Mulford Library Building are locked at 7:00 pm. To enter after than time, use your access/proxy card to get in. If you are affiliated with a program on Main Campus, you can request an access/proxy card: log into MyUT and go to the student tab. On the lower left column, there is a link to Request Door Access for HSC Proxy Card.

🚲 NEW! The bike rack is at the northeast "leg" of the Mulford Library Building, close to the foot bridge.

Mulford Health Science Library 101
  • Because Mulford may be very different from your previous academic library, we have outlined behavioral expectations because it's not fair to make you guess what's expected here.
  • Unlike some libraries, we do NOT have any areas for socializing. Please help us maintain our study-intensive environment by keeping social and loud conversations out of the library. (We wish our architecture allowed us to have fun space.)
  • We occupy the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors of the Library Building. To get here, take the south elevators to the fourth floor (or take the staircase beside the south elevators).
  • Regular library hours are posted by the main building doors, the library doors (on the fourth floor), and on our web page. Changes in hours will be posted in the library and on our social media: extended hours for fall and spring finals weeks and dedicated study (mid-February through mid-April), holiday and winter break closures, and any last-minute changes.
  • The circulation desk (circ desk) in on the fourth floor. This desk is staffed whenever the library is open to check materials in and out, to answer questions about the library, and to handle issues that come up. Library staff walk through the library to check the environment and to do headcounts.
  • If you identify any issues with our facilities (dirty restrooms, broken chair, water on the floor, food spills, etc.), please stop at the circ desk and let us know, so we can submit a work order. Only report roof leaks if there is not a trashcan catching the water. The University knows about the leaking roof.

What's with the Foo Dogs?

Two Chinese dog-lions, or foo dogs, guard the staircase leading from the 4th to the 5th floor of the Mulford Health Science Library.  They were a gift from a donor, Mr. Philip Porteus. At one time, our foo dogs were outside and served as guardians for the entire Mulford Library Building. While their exact age has not been determined, they are most likely 19th-century bronze casts.  Our foo dogs are the unofficial mascot for the Mulford Library, and we invite you to give them a closer look during your next visit, or rub their heads for good luck on your next exam!
