"How Do I Find Articles Published in Nursing Journals and/or Articles Written by Nurses?"

Articles in Nursing Journals

Not every nursing journal will have "nursing" or "nurse" in the title. Scanning database search results for articles published in journals with only "nursing" or "nurse" in the title is not an efficient or accurate identification method.

Therefore, in order to efficiently locate articles published in nursing journals, one method is to use the filter for Nursing Journals in the CINAHL database

Articles Written by Nurses

Nurses can publish their research anywhere, not just in nursing journals. To find articles written by nurses, use the First Author is Nurse or Any Author is Nurse limits in CINAHL

Narrow Search Results in CINAHL to Nursing Journal Articles

After conducting a search in the CINAHL (nursing & allied health literature) database, you can narrow your results to articles published in nursing journals only.

To find articles in nursing journals only, follow these steps after retrieving your initial set of results in CINAHL:

  1. On the left side of the search results page, under Limit To, click Show More
  2. In the window that pops up, navigate to the Journal Subset menu and select Nursing
  3. Scroll down and click the yellow Search button in the lower right corner

Your search results will now be limited to articles published in nursing journals.

Narrow Search Results in CINAHL to Articles Written by Nurses

Nurses and nurse researchers might not always publish articles in nursing-specific journals. They may publish their work in general health sciences or medical journals.

To find articles written by nurses, follow these steps after retrieving your initial set of results in CINAHL:

  1. On the left side of the search results page, under Limit To, click the Show More link located underneath Publication Date
  2. In the window that pops up, select either First Author is Nurse or Any Author is Nurse (*note - first author is the lead or primary author of an article)
  3. Scroll down and click the yellow Search button in the lower right corner

Your search results will now be limited to articles written by nurses.

If you have any questions about these steps, please contact your Nursing Librarian Jodi Jameson (jodi.jameson@utoledo.edu, 419.383.5152).

Browse the Online Journals List

You can search/browse for specific nursing journals within the library's Online Journals List.

  1. Within the Online Journals List, enter the keyword nursing in the search box (or add additional keywords - i.e. nursing and pediatrics; nursing and community health).
  2. Once you locate a specific nursing journal that corresponds with your research topic or interests, you can click the link to that journal and search directly within it for articles.
